The University of Tennessee, �����Ƶ, College of Architecture and Design is honored to welcome internationally acclaimed architect Smiljan �鲹�徱ć as the distinguished lecturer as a part of the college’s 60th Anniversary Weekend, kicking off at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 11.

Based in Santiago, Chile, �鲹�徱ć is best known for his evocative and boundary-pushing designs. His work transcends traditional architectural categories, exploring the sensory and social conditions of materials while reinterpreting historical narratives, often in close collaboration with sculptor Marcela Correa.

��ٳ������Ჹ��’s work challenges conventions and invites us to see architecture as an evolving dialogue between form, culture, and experience,” said Dean Jason Young. “By bringing him to our 60th anniversary weekend, we expand our community’s design knowledge, exposing our students, faculty, and alumni and friends to his visionary approach and the global perspectives that shape the future of our field. He embodies our commitment to vivid design education—an education that is bold, boundary-pushing, and deeply engaged with materiality and storytelling.”

�鲹�徱ć’s projects range from small-scale experimental structures to landmark cultural buildings, such as the Serpentine Pavilion in London, the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino in Santiago, and the Theatre of Bío Bío in Concepción, Chile.

Recognized globally for his contributions to architecture, �鲹�徱ć has received numerous awards, including the Architectural Record’s Design Vanguard award, the Oris Award in Croatia, and the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He is also an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects and a member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

�鲹�徱ć’s lecture will offer insight into his extensive body of work, his philosophy on materials and storytelling, and his ongoing efforts to push the boundaries of contemporary architecture and design. As president of Fundación de Arquitectura Frágil, he continues to champion experimental architecture that challenges conventions and expands the discipline’s possibilities.
