November 12, 2020 Dean Scott Poole Named Senior Fellow

Scott Poole, FAIA, dean of the College of Architecture and Design, has been selected as a 2020 Senior Fellow by Design Futures Council. DFC is a premier gathering of leaders representing a diversity of built environment disciplines committed to exploring and advancing the future of design.

The Senior Fellows designation is granted biennially to outstanding individuals who have provided noteworthy leadership to the advancement of design and related professions. Senior Fellows are recognized for clear, acknowledged and measurable contribution to the betterment of the architecture/engineering/construction industry that has had a meaningful influence in raising the overall professions within AEC leadership.

Poole was named dean of the college in 2011. As an academic leader and entrepreneurial administrator, he has earned national and international stature as a design educator and scholar, while refining the discourse between architecture and design education and professional practice. Throughout his career, he developed innovative strategies to advance meaningful collaborations between design education and practice, set the context for multiple nationally and internationally recognized experiential learning projects, hired and mentored award-winning educators, and engaged the collective capabilities of faculty to create inspiring environments for design education.

Poole has continually focused on one priority: The potential of students and their capacity to shape the world. He has been a forceful advocate for the professional development of young architects and emerging leaders; curated vigorous multidisciplinary dialogues connecting art, science and design; envisioned and established new state-of-the-art studios and fabrication facilities; and contributed to more integrated relationships between professional practice, affiliated industries and architecture and design education.

His long career as a design teacher, architect, author and leader has led to his many accomplishments and accolades. Notably, in 2016, he was elevated as a Fellow by the American Institute of Architects, and in 2012 and 2014, he was named by DesignIntelligence as one of America鈥檚 25 Most Admired Educators. In addition to many teaching and service awards, he received the Presidential Award of Excellence from the American Institute of Architects, Tennessee, in 2019.

Senior Fellows are identified through a selective process led by former senior fellows. 鈥淭o be recognized by peers at the Design Futures Council, [Senior Fellows] bring their whole selves to our community, offering insights and opinions that count and sharing presentations that move and interpersonal conversations not lost among us,鈥 said Dave Gilmore, president and CEO of Design Futures Council, in announcing the 2020 cohort. .

To be selected, professionals must exemplify a consistent and successful career in the built environment design professions extending a minimum of 20 years; offer recognized leadership or innovation that has meaningfully improved their organizations; and empower others to make the world a better place.

The was created in 1994 by Jonas Salk, founder of the Salk Institute, and James P. Cramer, former chief executive of the American Institute of Architects. Through DesignIntelligence, an independent company, DFC brings together leaders in design, architecture, construction and engineering for the purpose of identifying, exploring and advancing global trends, changes and opportunities in these and other design-related disciplines.
