Hansjoerg Goeritz, Professor of Architecture, and his professional colleague and a former College of Architecture and Design faculty member, Matt Hall, have together guest-edited the September issue of the renowned international architectural magazine, . The issue features original essays, new photography, images and research about Swedish architect, Bernt Nyberg [1927 鈥 1978].
and discovered Nyberg鈥檚 work during a mini-term study abroad trip with college students in 2010, and soon after, Hall began to research the architect, including interviewing surviving collaborators and capturing new photography and archive work.
This interest led Hall to curate and design the first exhibition on Nyberg鈥檚 work at the Skissernas Museum in Lund, Sweden. Soon after, Hall, Goeritz and Nathan Matteson curated a on Nyberg鈥檚 contemporary and friend, Sigurd Lewerentz, on the 50th anniversary of St. Peter church in Klippan, Sweden, with the contributing support of internationally recognized critics, scholars, educators and practitioners from Sweden, Denmark, Germany and the US.
Both exhibits and their related publications led to international recognition and interest from A+U, Tokyo.
In addition to co-editing the magazine, Goeritz and Hall also curated images and archival material, provided new photographs taken by them, coordinated and edited contributors鈥 writings, crafted their own essays and designed the layout for the publication. Material also was provided by ArkDes: The Swedish Center for Architecture and Design, Stockholm.
Goeritz鈥檚 essay seeks to contextualize Nyberg鈥檚 work beyond Sweden, and Hall鈥檚 essays focus on Nyberg鈥檚 collaboration with Lewerentz and the endangered nature of Nyberg鈥檚 work. Other essays were penned by Wilfried Wang and Vanja Knocke.
鈥淪ince our UT mini-term Grand Tour in 2010, Hansjoerg and I have been discussing Nyberg鈥檚 work and the intrigue into its mysteries,鈥 Hall said. 鈥淟ittle remains of his work, and what does remain is in constant threat of demolition, symptomatic of a larger issue of preserving works of modern architecture. We believe it鈥檚 important for our work to disseminate Nyberg鈥檚 architecture internationally.鈥
