Catie Newell is the founding principal of the architecture and research practice *Alibi Studio and an Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Michigan. Newell鈥檚 work and research capture spaces and material effects, focusing on the development of atmospheres through the exploration of textures, volumes and the effects of light or lack thereof. The work ranges in scale from buildings to products and explores the world most deeply with material constructions and photography.
Newell will present “Material Ghosts,” a speculation on key occupants of space: materials, light, and darkness. Keying into the topics undertaken in the Reclaimed symposium, the projects presented will center on modes of making and practice that tend to [impact] existing space by offering new techniques of making. Newell will share several projects from Alibi Studio’s architectural work and ongoing material research endeavors.
This lecture is part of Reclaimed, a lecture series and symposium led by Misri Patel, Visiting Assistant Professor of Practice and Fellow in the School of Interior Architecture. Reclaimed aims to connect computational design methods and traditional building techniques. Through interrogation and speculation, presenters and audiences, alike, will attempt to answer, “How can the status of craft redefine itself in the digital age?”
Newell’s lecture is funded by the Robert B. Church Memorial Lecture Fund. It is free and open to the public, and visitors are asked to follow . We strongly encourage visitors and our college community to wear masks.
