Lecture: Mitchell Squire
February 5, 2020 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
No costJoin us for a public lecture by Mitchell Squire, our 2020 BarberMcMurry Endowed Professor. The lecture, “A gravity so defiant, an intimacy so deformed,” will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 5:30 p.m., Rm. 109 in the Art + Architecture building, 1715 Volunteer Blvd. The lecture is funded by the BarberMcMurry Endowed Professorship. All are welcome.
Squire will present a poetic inquiry into the autotelic body of an increasingly unfit former bodybuilder (him) as not only harborage of muscle memory but also a form and space of flux capable of creating sensorial and spatial assemblages comprised of ideas emanating from texts, objects, portraiture, and live performance. The presentation is part of a larger creative project under development that explores the socio-sexual effects of extractive economies and the material geophysics of race.
Squire, an artist and educator whose practice encompasses architecture, visual art and the study of material culture, is a nationally recognized educator in the field of architecture. He currently is a professor of architecture at Iowa State University and served a three-year term as external examiner at the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, from 2014 to 2016.
