Lecture: Geoff Manaugh
March 19, 2018 @ 1:30 pm
No costJoin us for a public lecture, “A Burglar’s Guide to the City,” by from , on Monday, March 19, 2018.
Manaugh will discuss the research and field work that went into his recent book, A Burglar’s Guide to the City. For A Burglar’s Guide, Manaugh met with burglars, police, FBI investigators, panic room designers, and more in an attempt to understand how the built environment often inadvertently shapes the crimes that occur within it — including how, for thousands of years, law enforcement has sought to reshape the city into a tool for preventing widespread deviance. Even in our visions of Utopia are the expectations of police. We will also discuss various themes explored on BLDGBLOG since its launch in 2004.
Geoff Manaugh is a freelance writer, curator, and the author of A Burglar’s Guide to the City, about the relationship between crime and architecture. He is also the author of BLDGBLOG, a long-running blog about architecture, landscape, and speculative design. Manaugh has taught at Columbia University, SCI-Arc, and the University of Southern California, and he has lectured internationally, including at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, the Architectural Association, and the Australian National Architecture Conference. A Burglar’s Guide to the City was optioned for television by CBS Studios.
Headshot credits to Sasha Maslow/ Wall Street Journal.
Unless otherwise noted, all lectures begin at 5:30 p.m. in Rm. 109/McCarty Auditorium in the Art + Architecture Building, 1715 Volunteer Blvd. All are welcome.
