No costJoin us for a public lecture by ,, on Monday, October 22, 2018.
Carse’s lecture, titled “Logistical Environments: How Deepwater Dredging Links the Panama Canal and Southeastern United States,” will discuss how rapid global connectivity is achieved through place-based construction and standardized infrastructures. Through his analysis of the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project, Carse will explain how waterways are standardized to accommodate new generations of megaships and discuss how globalization is affecting land use and water management in coastal communities.
Trained as an anthropologist, Carse uses ethnographic and historical methods to understand how large infrastructure projects shape and are shaped by neighboring communities and environments. His book, Beyond the Big Ditch: Politics, Ecology, and Infrastructure at the Panama Canal, discusses his extensive fieldwork in Panama on water management and politics. Currently, Carse is conducting a multi-sited study of the global shipping industry related to the expansion of the Panama Canal and the construction of deepwater ports in the southeastern United States.
